PRESENTED BY: NEREYDA LEDEZMA ELL students lack the English language, therefore as educators we need to find a variety of ways of engaging our ELL students to begin writing in English without feeling overwhelmed in the classroom. Participants will view different kinds of class made books such as books about students, thematic units, non-fiction topics of interest, and special occasion books. Various binding methods will be explained. Mentor texts will be used to inspire writing. Participants will plan a class made book to complete in the classroom. RUTH VILLARREAL “Baby You Can Drive My Car” reinforces the need for, and assistance in, the development of a clear thesis statement, often omitted in essays produced by struggling writers, for the EOC II Persuasive Essay. The C-A-R method, developed in working with marginal students, helps students in the creation of concise and focused thesis statements using an easy-to-remember three- step process. The C-A-R method is instrumental in the pre- writing and drafting phase of the essay as it establishes purposeful argument. The lesson is aligned to writer’s workshop so that attendees are able to take the lesson back to the students in their respective ELA classrooms. Strand - Organizing / Drafting Handouts Developing Young Writers Though Authentic Literacy Experiences PRESENTED BY: NOHEMI V. GARZA, LEONILA GARCIA, SYLVIA LOPEZ Young writers learn the forms and functions of writing as they observe modeled lessons and participate in authentic literacy and writing activities. In this session, teachers will acquire strategies to support young writers develop their unique voices and emergent writing skills using authentic literacy experiences. These effective strategies include shared writing as well as demonstration, explanation and models needed by young learners in order for them to understand ways to incorporate text structures and conventions of writing including punctuation and spelling. When clear, explicit and targeted modeling of the ways in which writers work is presented to young children, students can develop an understanding of the purposes and techniques of writing. Samples of shared writing, independent student writing, class books, anchor charts, and journaling will be showcased in this session. Join us as we learn to share the pen with young writers. MELBA SALAZAR-LUCIO Published author and Houston ISD teacher, David Daniel Lucio and his instructor will present his Cinderella story of being a BISD 504/Dyslexia student who pushed and shoved until Daniel found a positive outlet in his remedial writing English class. Submitting a “Dreamer Story” to his class anthology 12 year ago became his golden ticket to being discovered as a children’s book author in 2015. Now almost finished with his second book, Mr. Lucio and his instructor want to teach others how to uncover the dormant authors in your class. The Dreamer books, autographed by the author, will be available for purchase at this session Strand - Publishing Handouts Engaging Reluctant Writers PRESENTED BY: LYNNE WATSON Using a writing to learn approach incorporating graphic organizers, mentor texts, group wiring and other supports to reduce some of the stress of writing experienced by reluctant writers and/or writers in general. Ideas, Organization, and Sentence Structure
PRESENTED BY: CRISTINA BOREAUX I plan on taking teachers through the brainstorming/prewriting process through the use of webs, timelines and sketches. I will use the mentor text "When I was young in the Mountains," to help teachers model organization methods. I will end the session by focusing on sentence variation in student writing. Handouts A Conduit to the Imagination PRESENTED BY: PORTIA BELMONT Imitation helps to build better sentences through first analyzing then imitating model sentences by authors. Students can learn practices in sentence imitating. They can copy the grammatical tools authors use to build their masterpiece sentences. The sentences will be based on J.K. Rowling's sentences. Ratiocination offers a revising strategy that is keenly designed to enhance a writer’s performance in five key areas: Progression, Development, Word Choice, Sentences, andConventions. Ratiocination breaks down the broad task of “revising: into manageable, systematic steps, providing writers a checklist that is completely aligned to the TEA Scoring Rubric’s three distinct areas of Organization/ Progression, Development of Ideas, and User of Language and Conventions. Handouts Thesis: A Promise that Writer makes to the Reader PRESENTED BY: ANNE MCCUMBER Aimed towards middle school through grade 10 ELA teachers, my presentation would cover bridging the gap and transitioning into high school ELA classes which test for STAAR EOC in ENglish I and II. I would present on timed writings with the focus on organization and text evidence. I would emphasize the thesis statement as being the umbrella for all expository and persuasive writings to maintain focus. Finally, I would touch on the open-ended questions and the idea/answer required of the first sentence.
